Karmanos Cancer Institute (KCI) is a leading non-profit cancer research and treatment network headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, established in 1943 as the Detroit Institute for Cancer Research. Designated as one of 57 National Cancer Institute (NCI) Comprehensive Cancer Centers, KCI operates 16 locations across Michigan and Ohio, treating approximately 12,000 new patients annually with cutting-edge therapies and over 800 clinical trials, bolstered by its academic partnership with Wayne State University School of Medicine.
Mission
The Karmanos Cancer Institute is dedicated to delivering exceptional cancer care, advancing research, and educating the next generation of oncology professionals, with a vision of a cancer-free world. It integrates courage, commitment, and compassion into its efforts, offering more than 250 innovative treatments and fostering collaboration to enhance survivorship and prevention.[1]

Legislation
KCI was not directly created by legislation but evolved from the Detroit Institute for Cancer Research, founded in 1943, and was formalized as a non-profit in 1949 under Michigan law. Prentis Comprehensive Cancer Center, reflects federal recognition under the National Cancer Act of 1971.[3]

History
Founded in 1943 as the Detroit Institute for Cancer Research, KCI became a non-profit in 1949 and gained NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center status in 1978 as the Meyer L. Prentis Comprehensive Cancer Center. Renamed in 1995 after Barbara Ann Karmanos following a merger with Wayne State University and Detroit Medical Center programs, it joined McLaren Health Care in 2014, expanding to 16 sites and solidifying its role as Michigan’s largest cancer network.[14]
