National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program

National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program (NSGC&FP) was established in 1988 by the US Congress following the success of similar scholarship opportunities in the oceanic Sea Grant and agricultural Land Grant fields. The catch-all term Space Grant refers back to these previous federal programs. In 1989, the program was given over to NASA, which now administers it in the same way that NOAA administers Sea Grant.
The space-grant colleges are educational institutions in the United States that comprise a network of fifty-three consortia established in 1988 for the purpose of outer space-related research.[1] Each consortium is based in one of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or Guam,[2] and each consists of multiple independent space-grant institutions, with one of the institutions acting as lead.
Similar programs include sea-grant colleges (instituted in 1966) and sun-grant colleges (instituted in 2003).
Goals
- Establish and maintain a national network of universities with interests in aeronautics, outer space, and related fields.
- Encourage cooperative programs among universities, aerospace industry, and various levels of government.
- Promote interdisciplinary training, research, and public service related to aerospace.
- Recruit and train U.S. citizens, particularly women, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities, for careers in aerospace science and technology.
- Strengthen science, mathematics, and technology education from elementary through secondary levels.
Who is its sponsor?
- Federal Agency: NASA
- Sponsoring Office: NASA Office of STEM Engagement
When was it created and how?
The program was established in 1988 through the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Authorization Act of 1988.
Describe its funding
Funding for the NSGC&FP began in 1989. There is no fixed end date for the funding; it is subject to annual appropriations by Congress. The exact funding amount varies annually but is intended to support research, education, and public outreach projects across the 52 consortia.[3]
