Office of Patient Care Services (PCS) is a key office within the Veterans Health Administration, responsible for directing clinical care policies, managing specialty care programs, and supporting over 9 million enrolled veterans through a network of VA medical facilities nationwide.
Mission
The Office of Patient Care Services aims to improve veterans’ health outcomes by developing and implementing clinical policies, overseeing national programs, and fostering patient-centered care innovations across the VA system. It provides leadership to specialty care services (e.g., primary care, mental health, geriatrics), ensures evidence-based practices, and supports VHA clinicians with tools and training to deliver consistent, high-quality healthcare tailored to veterans’ needs.[1]
Parent organization
The PCS operates under the Veterans Health Administration, the healthcare delivery arm of the Department of Veterans Affairs, which manages the largest integrated healthcare system in the U.S., serving veterans through over 1,200 facilities.[2]
Legislation
The PCS was not established by specific legislation but functions under VHA’s authority from the Veterans Health Care Eligibility Reform Act of 1996 (Public Law 104-262), which restructured VA healthcare to emphasize comprehensive and preventive services.<ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.va.gov/health/aboutvha.asp |title=About VHA |publisher=Department of Veterans Affairs |access-date
